17 유대인이라 불리는 네가 율법을 의지하며 하나님을 자랑하며
18 율법의 교훈을 받아 하나님의 뜻을 알고 1)지극히 선한 것을 분간하며
19 맹인의 길을 인도하는 자요 어둠에 있는 자의 빛이요
20 율법에 있는 지식과 진리의 모본을 가진 자로서 어리석은 자의 교사요
어린 아이의 선생이라고 스스로 믿으니
21 그러면 다른 사람을 가르치는 네가 네 자신은 가르치지 아니하느냐 도둑질하지 말라
선포하는 네가 도둑질하느냐
22 간음하지 말라 말하는 네가 간음하느냐 우상을 가증히 여기는 네가 신전 물건을 도둑질하느냐
23 율법을 자랑하는 네가 율법을 범함으로 하나님을 욕되게 하느냐
24 기록된 바와 같이 ㄱ)하나님의 이름이 너희 때문에 이방인 중에서 모독을 받는도다
25 네가 율법을 행하면 할례가 유익하나 만일 율법을 범하면 네 할례는 무할례가 되느니라
26 그런즉 무할례자가 율법의 규례를 지키면 그 무할례를 할례와 같이 여길 것이 아니냐
27 또한 본래 무할례자가 율법을 온전히 지키면 율법 조문과 할례를 가지고 율법을 범하는
너를 정죄하지 아니하겠느냐
28 무릇 표면적 유대인이 유대인이 아니요 표면적 육신의 할례가 할례가 아니니라
29 오직 이면적 유대인이 유대인이며 할례는 마음에 할지니 영에 있고 율법 조문에 있지 아니한 것이라 그 칭찬이 사람에게서가 아니요 다만 하나님에게서니라
사도 바울은 로마서 1장에서 모든 인간들의 죄악상을 고발했습니다. 2장에 들어오면서는 남을 판단하는 사람을 지적하여 호통을 칩니다. 남을 판단하는 사람은 과연 누구를 가리키는 것인가? 라는 질문에 유대인들이라고 말씀을 드렸지만, 넓게 보면 이방인 신자도 얼마든지 포함될 수 있습니다.
하지만 오늘 본문인 17절은 그 대상을 명확하게 밝힙니다. 유대인이라 불리는 네가…
17-20절 자화자찬
유대인이라는 의미는 칭찬, 찬송입니다. 바벨론 포로기 이후부터 주로 사용되었고, 성경에 처음 등장한 것은 열왕기하 16장 6절에서입니다.[1]
사도 바울은 이 유대인들이 스스로를 어떻게 생각하는지에 대해서 열거합니다. 유대인들은 율법을 의지하며, 하나님을 자랑하며, 하나님의 뜻을 알고, 지극히 선한 것을 분간하며, 지식과 진리의 모본을 가진 자로서, 맹인의 길을 인도하는 자요, 어둠에 있는 자의 빛이요, 어리석은 자의 교사요, 어린아이의 선생이라고 생각합니다. 한마디로 하면 자화자찬(自畵自讚) 입니다.[2]
하지만 이 말은 어느 정도 사실이기도 합니다. 하나님의 말씀을 받은 민족으로 유대인들은 독특한 위치를 차지합니다. 사도 바울이 열거한 유대인들의 특징은 회심 전 사도 바울의 자화상이라 할 수 있습니다. 영국이 낳은 위대한 신학자 톰 라이트 Tom Wright 는 바울은 회심 전까지만 해도 이스라엘 민족의 이러한 부르심을, 그가 딛고 굳건히 설 수 있는 반석으로 보았을 것이다 라고 말했습니다. 바울이 유대인들의 교만한 마음을 이토록 잘 표현할 수 있었던 이유는 그들의 마음 상태가 회심 전 자신의 마음 상태였기 때문이었던 것입니다.
21-24절 위선적 신앙
사도 바울은 유대인들의 교만하기만 하고 실천하지 않는 삶과 신앙의 위선을 강력하게 지적합니다.
말로는 모든 사람을 가르치지만 정작 본인은 실천하지 않는 삶, 이미 예수께서 손가락 하나 까딱하려 하지 않는다[3]고 야단하신 바 있습니다.
사도 바울이 지적하는 그들의 죄악상은 말로는 도둑질, 간음, 우상숭배 하지 말라고 하지만, 실제 삶에서는 도둑질 하고, 음란하며, 우상숭배 함으로 율법을 범하는 이중적인 삶의 태도입니다.
유대인들의 조상들은 도둑질, 음란, 우상숭배로 심판을 받아 바밸론 70년의 포로 생활을 경험한 바 있습니다. 이미 그들에게는 율법도 있었고, 할례도 있었지만 실제로 율법을 지키지 않는다면 그것들은 하나님의 심판으로부터 그들을 지켜줄 수 없는 무용지물입니다.
사도 바울 시대에도 유대인들은 악명이 높았습니다. 돈에 눈이 먼 자들이었고, 직접 우상숭배를 하지는 않았지만, 이방 신전에 있는 우상들을 훔쳐다가 다시 파는 수법으로 이득을 챙겼습니다. 이것은 또 다른 종류의 우상숭배였습니다. 덕분에 예나 사도 바울 시대나 하나님의 이름이 유대인들 때문에 이방인 중에서 모욕을 당하고 욕을 먹었던 것입니다.
그런데 하나님의 이름이 모독을 받는 것은 오늘날 교회 교인들에게서도 일어나는 일 아닌가요?
어제 저는 매우 신기한 뉴스를 보았습니다. 거의 20년간 이민목회를 했던 목사님이 교회를 사임하고
한국에서 3000원짜리 밥집을 열었다는 소식이었습니다. LA 나성영락교회에서 7년간 부목사로 사역하고,
세계선교교회 담임목사가 되어 8년간 사역을 한 최운형 목사는 자신이 전하는 말씀과 현실의 삶의 괴리를 느끼고 고민하던 중, 한국에 어떤 신부님이 청년들을 위한 3000원짜리 식당 문간을 운영한다는 소식을 접하고, 2018년 교회에 사임을 요청한 후 한국에 와서 식당을 운영하게 된 것입니다. 힘들고 어려운 청년들을 섬기는 것과 삶의 현장으로 가는 것이 더 성경적이라는 개인적 소신 때문이었습니다. 저는 개인적으로 다시 한 번 목회의 본질에 대해서 생각하게 되었습니다. 진짜 목회가 무엇인가? 먹을 것으로 주라는 예수님의 명령에 따라 모든 목사들이 밥집을 운영하는 것만은 아닐텐데…
그런데 놀라운 것은 댓글이었습니다. 주로 교회에 다니지 않는 사람들의 반응이 한결같이… 진짜 목사다! 나도 종교를 가지고 싶다! 존경한다 등등 칭찬 일변이었습니다. 믿음이 무엇이고, 목회가 무엇일까요?
25-29절 참 유대인
사도 바울은 이제 할례를 중심으로 참 유대인이 어떤 사람인지에 대해서 논합니다. 할례는 남성 성기의 포피를 베어내는 의식으로 아브라함과 맺은 하나님의 언약(창세기17장)입니다. 남자 아이들이 하루에 화장실을 몇 번이고 갈 때마다 나는 하나님의 언약의 백성임을 상기 시키는 놀라운 기억장치입니다.
하지만 이러한 본질은 잊고 할례가 그저 형식적인 표시가 될 때, 그것은 형식주의로 타락합니다.
모든 기독교의 예식, 형식화된 예배도 마찬가지입니다. 정신과 중심, 의미가 결여된 채로 형식만을 강조하면 그것은 타락한 형식주의가 되는 것입니다. 종교개혁자들이 로마카톨릭에서 문제 삼은 점이 바로 이 형식주의 입니다.
바울은 다음과 같이 논리를 펼칩니다. 순종 없는 할례는 아무 의미가 없다. 무할례와 같다. 하지만 할례가 없을지라도 순종하면 그것은 할례 있는 것과 같다. 무할례자가 율법을 지키면, 할례 있으면서 율법을 지키지 않는 유대인을 정죄하지 않겠느냐? 그러므로 참유대인 참할례자는 성령으로 마음에 할례를 행하는 자이다.
그렇습니다. 진짜 유대인은 민족적 지위에 의한 유대인로서 사람들에게 칭찬을 받는 것이 아닌, 율법을 성령으로 마음에 새기고, 행함으로서 하나님께 칭찬(유다)을 받는 자가 진짜 유대인인 것입니다.
모태신앙, 신앙이 몇 대째, 교회에서 직분이 무엇 등등 이런 것으로 진짜 크리스천을 구분할 수 없습니다. 물론 위에 열거한 것들은 신앙생활에 있어 매우 중요한 것이고, 소중한 믿음의 유산들입니다.
다만 그것들이 하나님의 칭찬을 보장하는 것이 아니라는 것입니다. 율법을 온전하게 지키는 것이 핵심입니다.
하지만 율법을 온전하게 지키는 것은 오직 하나님의 은혜 아니고서는 불가능합니다.
그래서 할례는 성령으로 마음에 하는 것입니다. 성령으로 마음에 할례를 받아 죄를 회개하고, 죄악을 실제 삶에서 베어내 버리는 고통을 감수하는 삶이 바로 율법을 지키는 삶입니다.
이러한 자야말로 이면적 유대인, 곧 참 유대인입니다. 우리들처럼 말입니다!

17 But if you call yourself a Jew and rely on the law and boast in God
18 and know his will and approve what is excellent, because you are instructed from the law;
19 and if you are sure that you yourself are a guide to the blind,
a light to those who are in darkness,
20 an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of children,
having in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth
21 you then who teach others, do you not teach yourself? While you preach against stealing,
do you steal?
22 You who say that one must not commit adultery, do you commit adultery?
You who abhor idols, do you rob temples?
23 You who boast in the law dishonor God by breaking the law.
24 For, as it is written, “The name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.”
25 For circumcision indeed is of value if you obey the law, but if you break the law,
your circumcision becomes uncircumcision.
26 So, if a man who is uncircumcised keeps the precepts of the law,
will not his uncircumcision be regarded as circumcision?
27 Then he who is physically uncircumcised but keeps the law will condemn you
who have the written code and circumcision but break the law.
28 For no one is a Jew who is merely one outwardly, nor is circumcision outward and physical.
29 But a Jew is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart,
by the Spirit, not by the letter. His praise is not from man but from God.
The apostle Paul accuses the guilt of all human beings in Romans 1. In chapter 2, points out and yell the person who judges others. Who is the person who judges others? They were Jews, but broadly Gentile believers can be included also. However, today's scripture, verse 17, the Apostle Paul clearly identifies. Now you, if you call yourself Jew... Verses 17-20 Self-Admiration and Self-Praise The meaning of Jews is commendation, praise. It was used broadly since the Babylonian captivity, but it first appeared in the Bible, 2 Kings 16:6. The apostle Paul lists what Jews think of themselves. Jews rely on the law and brag about the relationship to God, know His will, approve of what is superior, have in the Law the embodiment of knowledge and truth, a guide for the blind, a light for those in the dark, an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of infant. Another word, it is self-admiration and self-praise. However, this is somewhat true. As a nation that received the Word of God, the Jews are in a unique status. The Jewish characteristics listed by the Apostle Paul are self-portraits of the Apostle Paul before conversion. The great theologian of England, Tom Wright said Paul would have seen this calling of the Israelites as a rock which he could stand firmly until before his conversion. The reason Paul was so good at expressing the pride of the Jews was that their state of mind was Paul’s own state of mind before conversion. Verses 21-24 Hypocritical Faith
The Apostle Paul strongly points out that the Jews are only proud of themselves, but do not practice in their life and hypocrasy of faith. They teach everyone in words, but do not practice in their lives, that is why Jesus scold them that they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them. The Apostle Paul points out their sin is that they tell people not to steal, commit adultery, and idolatry in words, but in their own real life, they steal, obscene, and idolatry. It is a dual attitude of their lives breaking the Law. The ancestors of the Jews were judged for theft, obscenity, and idolatry and because of that they experienced 70 years of captivity in Babylon. They already had the Law and circumcision, but if they don't actually obey the Law, those are useless things that cannot protect them from God's judgment. Even in the days of the Apostle Paul, the Jews had bad reputation. They were blind to the money and did not do idolatry directly, but they profited by stealing and reselling the idols in the pagan shrines. This was another type of idolatry. Because of this, the days of the Apostle Paul, God's name were insulted among the Gentiles because of the Jews. By the way, isn’t it the name of God blasphemed because of church members nowadays? Yesterday I saw some interesting news. The pastor who was in the immigration ministry for almost 20 years resigns the church and he opened a 3,000 Won restaurant in Korea. Served as an assistant pastor for 7 years at Naseong Youngrak Church in Los Angeles, Pastor Woon-Hyung Choi, who served as the pastor of the World Mission Church for 8 years. He was distressed between the words he conveyed and the reality of his life, and heard that a priest in Korea ran a restaurant, “Doorway” selling 3,000 won gimbap to young people. In 2018, after resigned from the church, he went back to Korea to run a restaurant. It was because of his personal belief which serving youth who are in hard and difficult conditions and going to the field of life is more biblical. I personally thought about the nature of ministry once again. What is the real pastoral work? Not every pastor would run a restaurant at Jesus' command to give food. But the surprise thing was the comments. The reactions of people who don't attend church usually... Real pastor! I want to have religion too! I admire it, etc. What is faith and what is ministry? Verses 25-29 True Jews The apostle Paul now discusses the true Jews of circumcision. Circumcision is God's covenant with Abraham (Genesis 17) as a ritual that cuts the foreskin of the male penis. Whenever the boys go to the toilet many times a day, it is an amazing reminder that they are a people of God's covenant. But if they forget this essence and when circumcision becomes just a formal sign, it degenerates into formalism. The same is true for all Christian ceremonies and formalized worship. If formality is emphasized without spirit, heart, and meaning, it becomes a fallen formalism. It is the formalism that the Reformers questioned in Roman Catholicism. Paul follows this logic: Circumcision without obedience means nothing. It is like uncircumcision. However, even if the person is uncircumcised, if he obeys, it is regarded as circumcised. If the uncircumcised person obeys the law, won't he condemn Jews who are circumcised and do not obey the law? Therefore, the true circumcision, the true Jewish, is the circumcision of the heart by the Holy Spirit. That's right. A real Jew is not a Jew by national status, but a person who engrave the Law into the heart by Holy Spirit and who is praised by God (Judah) for obeying the Law. It is impossible to distinguish a real Christian by motherhood faith, generations of faith, positions in the church, and etc. Of course, these are very important in religious life, and are very valuable heritages of faith. However, these does not guarantee God's praise. Complete obedience of the Law is the key. But, complete obedience of the Law is impossible without God's grace. So, circumcision needs to be done in the heart by the Holy Spirit.
Circumcise the heart by the Holy Spirit and repent sins, endure the suffering of cutting away sins from real life. This is the life of obeying the Law.
This is inwardly Jews, true Jews. Like us!
