1 여호와께서 집을 세우지 아니하시면 세우는 자의 수고가 헛되며 여호와께서 성을 지키지 아니하시면 파수꾼의 깨어 있음이 헛되도다
2 너희가 일찍이 일어나고 늦게 누우며 수고의 떡을 먹음이 헛되도다 그러므로 여호와께서 그의 사랑하시는 자에게는 잠을 주시는도다
3 보라 자식들은 여호와의 기업이요 태의 열매는 그의 상급이로다
4 젊은 자의 자식은 장사의 수중의 화살 같으니
5 이것이 그의 화살통에 가득한 자는 복되도다 그들이 성문에서 그들의 원수와 담판할 때에 수치를 당하지 아니하리로다
시편 127편의 제목은 솔로몬의 시 곧 성전에 올라가는 노래[1] 입니다. 성전에 올라가는 노래(시 120-134편) 중에서 여덟 번째 노래입니다. 특별히 솔로몬의 저작인 시편은 오늘 본문과 72편 2가지뿐 입니다.
본 시편은 믿음으로 세워지는 가정의 우선순위와 실천에 대한 지혜 시편으로, 하나님 나라를 세워가는데 쓰임 받는 경건한 가정이 되기 위해 자녀들과 어떻게 해야 하는지에 대한 교훈을 제시합니다.[2]
1-2절
여호와께서 집을 세우지 아니하시면
여기서 집은 주거하는 건물로서 집과 가정의 두 가지 이중적 의미를 갖습니다.
세우는 자의 수고가 헛되며 여기서 헛되다에 해당하는 히브리어는 שָׁ֤וְא (사우)는 공허, 허무, 텅 빈, 쓸모 없는 이라는 의미입니다. 원문 성경은 헛되다 가 각 문장에서 가장 먼저 사용됩니다.
직역하면 헛되다 그들의 수고가, 헛되다 파수꾼의 깨어 있음이, 헛되다 너를 위하여 일찍 일어나는 것이 라고 강조 됩니다. 하나님이 인정하시지 않고, 도우시지 않으면 그 일이 무엇이든지 헛된 일이 됩니다.
2년 전 대통령과 정부가 염원을 담아 3천만불짜리 집을 지었는데, 한 순간에 무너지고 말았습니다.[3] 아무리 내가 집을 지으려고 해도 하나님이 허락하시지 않으면 안 됩니다. 이것은 가정도 마찬가지입니다.
그리고 가정의 확장이 바로 성읍인데, 그 성을 여호와께서 지키지 않으면 아무리 군인들이 밤새 뜬 눈으로 성을 지켜도 소용이 없는 것입니다.
또한 아침부터 일찍이 일어나 밤늦게까지 수고를 해도 정당한 결과를 얻을 수가 없습니다. 하나님이 함께 하시지 않는다면 말입니다. 그래서 잠 5:10절[4]은 원문 그대로 직역하면 너의 피곤에 지친 노력들은 낯선 자의 가정에 있게 될 것이다 라고 말합니다. 아주 속상한 일입니다!
그러므로! 아주 중요합니다. 여호와께서 그의 사랑하시는 자에게는 잠을 주시는도다. 삶은 기를 쓰고, 악을 쓰고 발버둥 칠 필요가 없습니다. 이것은 성경의 근본적인 근면의 정신을 훼손하는 것이 결코 아닙니다. 주신 하루에 감사하며 그저 최선을 다하고 모든 염려는 주님께 맡기고 믿음으로 살아가는 자에게 하나님은 샬롬(평강)을 주신다는 것입니다. 그러므로 아무 염려 없이 머리만 대면 잠을 잘 수 있는 것은 그야말로 축복입니다! 존 스토트 목사는 다음과 같이 이 부분을 해석합니다.
이것은 물론 우리 주님께서 마태복음 6:25-34에서 가르치신 말씀이 앞일에 대해 신중하게 대비하는 것을 금지하신 것이 아닌 것처럼, 근면을 정죄하는 것이 아니다. 여기서 정죄하는 것은 한편으로는 염려이며, 다른 한편으로는 지나치게 자신에 찬 행동이다. 이 모두가 불신의 징후이다.
한마디로 여호와가 배제된 모든 활동은 불신이고, 그 결과는 어떻게 되든지 허무할 뿐입니다.
3-5절
보라! 히브리어로는 힌네 הִנֵּ֤ה 라는 감탄사인데, 주변을 환기시키고 시인에게 집중 시키는 역할을 합니다.
가정을 세우는데 가장 중요한 것은 자녀들입니다. 자녀를 잘 양육해야 건강하고 아름다운 가정이 탄생하고, 각 가정들이 건강해야 공동체 나아가 국가가 건강할 수 있습니다. 하나님의 나라 역시 이런 건강한 가정을 통하여 이루어져 가는 것입니다.
자녀가 어떤 존재인가?
첫 번째로 자녀는 하나님이 주신 기업이고 상급입니다(3절). 자녀는 하나님께로부터 세습 받은 재산, 유산이며 선물인 것입니다. 중요한 개념은 원주인이 있다는 것입니다.
신약의 비유를 빌리자면 부모는 청지기입니다. 주인의 자녀를 맡아 교육하며 양육해야 하는 책임이 있는, 하지만 그들을 자신의 것인양 함부로 다루는 것은 주인이 허락하시지 않습니다. 최선을 다해 책임을 져야 하지만, 하나님이나 자녀들에게 우리의 권리를 주장 할 수 없습니다. 거룩한 이 땅에서의 사명이 자녀양육입니다.
두 번째로 자녀는 부모들의 무기입니다(4절). 시인은 아버지를 원수들과 싸우는 전사로 묘사합니다. 그리고 전사의 필수 무기는 활과 화살입니다. 자녀는 영적인 전쟁 가운데 부모가 사탄의 왕국을 향해 날려야 할 강력한 화살입니다! 자녀들은 하나님의 나라를 위해 세상 속으로 쏴야 할 무적의 무기인 것입니다! 당신의 자녀는 세상을 뒤집을 수 있는 강력한 무기로 준비되고 있습니까? 다윗처럼, 다니엘처럼 말입니다!
세 번째로 자녀는 하나님의 복입니다(5절). 시인은 당시 문화적인 배경을 이미지화하여 노래합니다. 당시 성문은 모든 분쟁의 재판을 하는 장소입니다. 아무래도 누군가와 싸울 때 우리편이 많으면 든든하겠죠? 영적으로도 마찬가지입니다. 혼자서는 천 명을 쫓을 수 있지만, 둘은 2천이 아니라 만 명을 쫓을 수 있습니다. 예수를 구주로 고백하는 우리의 자녀들이 많아질수록 영적인 전쟁에서 더욱 쉽고 크게 승리할 수 있습니다.
상상해보십시오. 부모님과 자녀들이 예루살렘을 향하여 먼 길을 함께 하며 이런저런 대화를 나눕니다.
온 세상을 창조하신 하나님, 노아의 방주, 조상 아브라함과 족장들, 이집트에서의 고통과 극적인 출애굽, 유월절 사건!
그러다가 저 높은 산 위에 위치한 거룩한 도성 예루살렘이 보일 때 엄마와 아빠가 이 노래 시편 127편을 노래합니다! 아이들 역시 엄마 아빠를 따라 성전에 오르는 노래를 배웁니다.
이렇게 기성세대에게서 다음 세대에게로 하나님과 그가 하신 일이, 그리고 예배가 전승됩니다.
그래서 이스라엘은 행복한 사람입니다.
그래서 영적인 이스라엘인 우리가 행복한 사람입니다!

the builders labor in vain.
Unless the Lord watches over the city,
the guards stand watch in vain.
2 In vain you rise early
and stay up late,
toiling for food to eat—
for he grants sleep to[a] those he loves.

The title of Psalms 127 is A Song of Ascents of Solomon. It is the 8th song of the Song of Ascents collection (Psalms 120 - 134). Solomon is the author of just 2 chapters in Psalms, this one and Psalms 72. This Psalms focuses on how to prioritize as a family of faith. It presents a lesson on how to treat your children to becoming a Godly family.
Verse 1-2
Unless the Lord builds the house,
Here, the word “House” can have two meanings: the actual building of a house and family.
The builders labor in vain. Here the phrase “in vain” in Hebrew is שָׁ֤וְא (shav) which means empty, nothing, useless. In the original bible, the phrase “in vain” is used first in the sentence.
It is emphasized that In vain the builders labor, in vain the guards stand watch, in vain you rise early. If God does not recognize the work and if God does not help, then the work is in vain.
Two years ago, the president and government out of pure desire decided to build a 30 million dollar house but it collapsed soon after. No matter how much I try to build a house, if God does not allow it, then it will not be completed Same goes for family as well.
Even if you get wake up early and stay up late, you will not be able to receive good results if God is not with you. So Proverbs 5:10 can be translated into this: your efforts that toil you, enriches the houses of others. It is a very sad situation!
So it is very important to not worry on our own,
For those who thank God everyday and live by faith, God gives them peace (Shalom). So those who can fall asleep without any worries anywhere is a blessing.
Pastor John Stott interpreted the following as so:
In Matthew 6:25-34, it is not stopping us from being able to get ready for things that are going to happen. But when you are worrying so much about something, that can be sin because this can be the start of not trusting God and just trusting yourself.
So ultimately everything that excludes God is no trust and that will result into everything in vain.
Verses 3-5
Here! In Hebrew it is הִנֵּ֤ה which is used as an exclamation. It is used to get others to focus on something. Children are the most important when it comes to building a family. Children have to be nurtured and discipled well which will lead to a heathy families and healthy families will lead to a healthy country. And the Kingdom of god will also come from healthy families.
What do our children mean for us?
First, Children are God’s given heritage and reward (verse 3). Children are our legacy, our inheritance, and our gift from God. The important concept is that there is a owner.
So the parents are the stewards, meaning the stewards will take care of the children and they have the responsibility to disciple them but the owner will not give them the eright to do whatever they want to do with them. We have to try our best to be responsible for them but we cannot claim ownership to God or the children. Our mission here is to disciple children.
Second. Children are the parents’ weapon (verse 4). The author of this Psalms compares the father to a warrior who is fighting his enemies. And that warrior’s main weapon is the bow and arrow. Children are the arrow fighting for the kingdom of God. And that arrow is a dangerous weapon that needs to be shot at this evil world? Is your child ready as a weapon to flip the world upside down? Just like David and just like Daniel!
Third, Children are Gods blessing (verse 5). And during that time in the court, that is where they handled all disputes. If you are fighting, it would be advantageous for you if you have more on your side, right? It is also the same spiritually. You can run after a thousand people by yourself, but if there are 2, not only can you run after two thousand but ten thousand. And when we have more children who give their lives to God, we will be victorious in this spiritual battle by a landslide.
Just imagine. The parents and the children are on a long road to Jerusalem and are talking about this and that. God who is the creator of this world, Noah’s Ark, Abraham and the different tribes, the pain at Egypt and the escape, the passover.
And the parents see God’s city Jerusalem and starts singing this Psalms 127. And the children follow after the parents and learn the psalms.
And just like this, God’s work and the worship towards God gets handed down to the next generation of believers.
And that is why Israel is filled with happiness.
And that is also why we are filled with happiness.
