(1) 모세가 모압 평지에서 느보 산에 올라가 여리고 맞은편 비스가 산꼭대기에 이르매 여호와께서 길르앗 온 땅을 단까지 보이시고
(2) 또 온 납달리와 에브라임과 므낫세의 땅과 서해까지의 유다 온 땅과
(3) 네겝과 종려나무의 성읍 여리고 골짜기 평지를 소알까지 보이시고
(4) 여호와께서 그에게 이르시되 이는 내가 아브라함과 이삭과 야곱에게 맹세하여 그의 후손에게 주리라 한 땅이라 내가 네 눈으로 보게 하였거니와 너는 그리로 건너가지 못하리라 하시매
(5) 이에 여호와의 종 모세가 여호와의 말씀대로 모압 땅에서 죽어
(6) 벳브올 맞은편 모압 땅에 있는 골짜기에 장사되었고 오늘까지 그의 묻힌 곳을 아는 자가 없느니라
(7) 모세가 죽을 때 나이 백이십 세였으나 그의 눈이 흐리지 아니하였고 기력이 쇠하지 아니하였더라
(8) 이스라엘 자손이 모압 평지에서 모세를 위하여 애곡하는 기간이 끝나도록 모세를 위하여 삼십 일을 애곡하니라
(9) 모세가 눈의 아들 여호수아에게 안수하였으므로 그에게 지혜의 영이 충만하니 이스라엘 자손이 여호와께서 모세에게 명령하신 대로 여호수아의 말을 순종하였더라
(10) 그 후에는 이스라엘에 모세와 같은 선지자가 일어나지 못하였나니 모세는 여호와께서 대면하여 아시던 자요
(11) 여호와께서 그를 애굽 땅에 보내사 바로와 그의 모든 신하와 그의 온 땅에 모든 이적과 기사와
(12) 모든 큰 권능과 위엄을 행하게 하시매 온 이스라엘의 목전에서 그것을 행한 자이더라
자녀들을 대학생 이상으로 양육한 기성세대의 최고의 관심사는 아마도 노후준비일 것입니다.
노후준비는 가장 먼저는 연금, 보험과 같은 물질적인 부분이 가장 많은 부분을 차지할 것입니다.
평균 수명이 많이 늘어난 요즘에는 건강 역시 매우 중요한 노후준비의 항목에 들어 갑니다.
어떤 방법으로든 노후를 준비하는 것은 현명하고 지혜로운 처사라고 생각합니다.
저는 목회자로서 노후준비도 중요하지만 사후(死後)준비가 훨씬 중요하다고 생각하는 사람입니다.
베이직 교회의 조정민 목사는 사후대책 이라는 제목의 요한계시록 설교집을 발간 하기도 했습니다.
사람이 잘 사는 것이 매우 중요한데, 그것만큼 중요한 것이 잘 죽는 것입니다. 항상 시니어 어르신들을 뵐 때 마다 목회자로서 갖는 부담이 있습니다. 나중에 천국을 갔을 때 내가 섬겼던 시니어 성도들 가운데 못 뵙는 분이 있으면 마음이 어떨까? 그 때마다 마음이 ‘덜컹’ 합니다.
보통 큰 교회들은 어르신들을 섬기는 교회 프로그램으로 문화교실과 같은 것을 운영합니다. 참 귀한 사역이라고 생각합니다. 하지만 이 땅에서 연세 드신 분들이 세상의 문화에 뒤쳐지지 않고 새로운 문명을 배우고, 익혀 그것을 누리는 것도 중요하지만 더 급한 것은 사후에 대한 대책과 구원의 확신에 대한 확인이라는 생각이 듭니다. 시니어부서일수록 더욱 예수님을 배우고, 날마다 예수, 복음을 들어야 합니다.
오늘 본문은 참으로 아름다운 한 노인의 이 땅에서 마지막 모습의 기록입니다. 저 역시 이러한 마지막, 죽음을 맞이하고 싶습니다. 먼저 신명기의 마지막이자 모세오경의 마지막인 신명기 34장을 살펴보기 전에, 분명히 해두어야 할 것은 적어도 5절 이하는 모세가 아닌 누군가가 기록했다는 사실입니다.
그렇다고 신명기나 모세오경이 결코 모세가 기록한 것이 아닌 짜집기라는 주장은 억측입니다. 부분적으로 누군가(아마도 여호수아)가 기록했을 것이고, 대필을 한 것도 있습니다. 하지만 여전히 오경의 저자는 모세이고, 원저자는 하나님이십니다. 그것이 성경입니다.
1-4절은 모세가 죽기 전에 약속의 땅을 바라보는 장면입니다.
느보산에 올라가 여리고 맞은편 비스가산 꼭대기에 이르매(1절) 는 마치 모세가 다른 두 산을 오른 듯한 오해를 불러 일으킬 수 있는 번역입니다. 오히려 KJV 영어 성경이 원문에 충실한 번역입니다.
unto the Mountain of Nebo, to the top of Pisgah 느보산, 곧 비스가 산 꼭대기에 올랐다
결국 느보 산이나 비스가 산 모두 아바림 산맥에 있는 높은 봉우리입니다. 비스가 산의 꼭대기 이름이 느보인 것입니다. 그곳에 올라간 모세는 사방으로 하나님이 주실 가나안 땅을 바라봅니다. 감격의 순간이고, 너무도 아름다운 장면이었을 것입니다.
하지만 율법을 상징하는 존재인 모세는 들어갈 수 없습니다. 영적인 교훈을 주십니다. 천국은 율법이 아닌 은혜, 곧 예수 그리스도 유월절 어린양의 보혈로 갈 수 있는 곳입니다. 모세 역시 더 이상 하나님께 떼 쓰지 않습니다. 하나님이 보여주신 땅들이 모세의 육안으로 볼 수 있는 곳까지인지, 아니면 어떤 학자들의 의견대로 특별한 영적인 은혜로 백마일 이상 떨어진 곳도 볼 수 있었는지는 모르겠습니다만,
중요한 것은 넓은 언약의 땅을 볼 수 있었다는 사실입니다. 이제는 다음 세대인 여호수아가 모세를 이어 그 사명을 감당할 것입니다. 모세는 죽지만, 하나님은 영원히 살아계신 분입니다!
5-8절은 모세의 죽음입니다.
여호와의 말씀대로 모압 땅에서 죽어(5절) 를 원문대로 직역하면
여호와의 입을 따라/여호와의 입에서 עַל-פִּי יְהוָה 알 피 예호와 입니다.
그래서 일부 유태인들은 하나님이 모세에게 입맞춤을 하시자 그가 죽었다고 합니다.
소름 끼칠 정도로 은혜롭습니다! 하나님이 아담의 코에 입김을 후~ 하고 불어 넣으실 때 인간이 생령이 되었습니다. 이제 다시 모세의 입에서 하나님이 그 루아흐(רוּח, 입김)를 회수하시자 모세는 흙으로 돌아가는 것입니다! 유대인들은 이것을 시적으로 하나님의 입맞춤으로 해석한 것입니다!
6절은 한국어 성경이 번역을 제대로 안 했습니다. 원문 성경을 보시면 And He buried him 으로 기록 되어 있습니다. 모세를 묻은 “그”가 여호수아일까요? 문맥상으로 보면 모세를 묻은 “그”는 하나님입니다.
평생을 당신을 위해 철저하게 충성했던 모세의 마지막을 하나님은 진심으로 대우해 줍니다.
그러므로 모세의 무덤을 오늘까지 아는 자가 없습니다. 여기서 오늘까지가 정확히 언제인지는 모르지만, 모세 이후부터 우리들이 살고 있는 현대까지도 모릅니다.[1] 만일 모세의 무덤을 사람들이 알게 되면 어떤 일이 벌어질까요? 엄청난 우상숭배, 성자(聖者) 숭배로 이어질 것입니다. 하나님은 그것을 막은 것입니다.
9-12절은 리더십의 계승입니다.
인간 영웅은 사라지지만, 하나님은 영원하십니다. 모세에게 임했던 하나님의 영이 모세의 안수함으로 여호수아에게도 임합니다. 이제 여호수아도 모세처럼 쓰임 받습니다. 아무리 많은 하나님의 종들, 일꾼들이 성경에 등장하지만 모세와 같은 자는 없습니다. 그는 여호와께서 대면하여 아시던 자(10절) 입니다. 그래서 그는 여호와의 온 집에 충성한 여호와의 종 모세입니다.
천년이 넘는 시간이 지나고 모세와 같은 선지가가 나타납니다.
그는 종이 아닌 하나님의 아들입니다. 모세는 그 아들이 오도록 길을 놓는 사람입니다.
우리는 종인 모세를 보면서, 그 아들을 기대해야 합니다.
철저히 자신은 감추고, 오직 아들이신 예수님만 빛나도록…
이것이 종 된 자의 삶입니다.
모세처럼 살고 모세처럼 죽기를 원합니다.

1 Then Moses climbed Mount Nebo from the plains of Moab to the top of Pisgah, across from Jericho. A primary concern for the generation who has kids at least in college is probably retirement.
Material things like pension and insurance will be the biggest part of retirement.
These days, because the average life span has increased, health is also a big part of retirement.
It is wise of you to prepare for retirement however you can.
For me, being a pastor, retirement is important but I think it is more important to prepare for things that will happen after one dies. Jung Min Cho, pastor at Basic Church, even wrote a book called “Post-Life Preparation” which is centered around the book of Revelations.
It is important how a person lives, but it is even more important how a person dies. As a pastor, I always have this burden whenever I meet seniors. When I get to heaven later, how will I feel if I don't see some of the seniors that I have served? It rattles my heart every time.
Usually at mega churches, they have classes for seniors where they can learn different skills. I think it is a very important ministry. It is important for a senior to learn new skills and to utilize them but it is even more important for them to prepare for post-life and to be assured of their salvation. So for the senior ministry, it is of utmost importance for them to learn more about Jesus and hear the gospel everyday.
In today’s scriptures, it is a story of the last days of a senior. I also would like to face death like this. Before we look at the last chapter of Deuteronomy and the last chapter of the last book of the Pentateuch (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy), we have to understand that from verse 1 - 5, someone other than Moses wrote these verses.
But to say that Deuteronomy or the Pentateuch was not written by Moses and that it was written by a mix of authors can only be speculation. Most likely Joshua was the one who wrote these verses. But the truth is that the author of the Pentateuch is Moses and the original author is God. That is the bible.
We can see in verse 1 - 4 that it is the image of Moses looking at the promised land right before he dies.
Moses climbed Mount Nebo and went on top of Mount Pisgah, across from Jericho (verse 1) can be seen as a misunderstanding that he went on top of two different mountains. But we can see the King James Version give us a more accurate translation
Unto the Mountain of Nebo, to the top of Pisgah
Ultimately Mount Nebo and Mount Pisgah are both mountain peaks of the Abarim range. So peak of Mount Pisgah is called Mount Nebo. So Moses goes up to this mountain and looks down at the land of Canaan that God has promised. It must have been such an exciting moment and a beautiful image.
But Moses who represented the law cannot go through. we receive a spiritual lesson here. Heaven is a place that we cannot enter by the law but by the grace of God, hence the blood of Jesus Christ. And Moses also did not complain to God any longer. So we don't know whether God showed Moses the land visually or if he was able to see a hundred miles away because of his spiritual blessing according to some scholars. But the important truth is that he was able to see the promised land. And then Joshua would grab the torch from Moses and follow after his mission. Moses dies but our God is an eternal God!
Verses 5-8 is when Moses dies.
And when we look at the literal translation of verse 5
Moses the servant of the Lord died there in Moab
It translates to “Followed after Jehovah’s mouth” or “At Jehovah’s mouth”
so some Jews believe that after God kissed Moses, that he died.
I’m getting goosebumps as I’m thinking about that image. It’s such a blessing! When God breathed in Adam’s nose, he became alive. And now as God took back the breathe from Moses, Moses went went back to dirt. So it seems the Jews took a poetic approach in saying that God kissed Moses.
Verse 6, in the Korean bible is translated incorrectly. When we look at the original verse, it says “And he buried him” So is God the one who buried Moses? When we look at the verse structurally, he refers to God.
Moses is being personally taken care by God because of his lifelong work of obeying God.
So nobody knows where Moses’ tomb is. I’m not sure of how many years passed since Moses, death, but we still don't know where his tomb is. What do you think would happen if people find out where Moses’ tomb is? It was result in serious idol worship, And God stopped that from happening.
Verses 9-12 about the succession of leadership,
Human heroes come and go but God is forever. God whose spirit was in Moses, through the ordination, the spirit also came in for Joshua. So now Joshua was also being used by God just like Moses. There are tons of servants and workers of God in the bible but nobody else really comes close to Moses. He knew the Lord face to face (verse 10)
And a thousand years pass by and a prophet like Moses appears.
And he is not a servant but God’s one and only son. And Moses paved the way for the son to come.
And as we look at God’s servant Moses, we need to get excited for the son of God.
We need to completely hide ourselves, but we need to only let God’s son Jesus shine.
This is living the life of a servant.
We wish to live like Moses and die like Moses.
